East Branch Chagrin River Restoration
Completed in 2024 for Chagrin River Watershed Partners
A design-build project with Meadville Land Service and Biohabitats, Inc. to restore the East Branch of the Chagrin River which meets the mainstem in Willoughby before flowing to Lake Erie. Water quality issues upstream, caused by factors like lack of riparian vegetation and aging infrastructure, threatened its “warmwater habitat aquatic life use” status. To address this, the Chagrin River Watershed Partners secured funding from the State’s H2Ohio program to restore the river. Together with Biohabitats we were able to stabilize 530 LF of the Chagrin mainstem and 1,050 LF of the East Branch through the use of bendway weirs, engineered log complexes, and a bankfull bench. The East Branch was realigned, and an old channel was restored as an oxbow wetland. Additionally, a dam was removed to enhance fish passage, particularly for steelhead. The restoration improves water quality, steelhead habitat, and offers recreational opportunities for the community.
